The Atomic Bomb

"Triumphant science and technology are only at the threshold of man's command over sources of energy so stupendous that, if used for military purposes, they can wipe out our entire civilization."-Cordell Hull

Nuclear Weapon

August 6th, 1945, the atomic bomb was created. The nuclear explosive device used energy from fission and fusion reactions in order to detonate, it used power released from the splitting of atomic nuclei. The innovation, which was a significant advancement in war fare, greatly changed geopolitical and war relations for many years to come.  The weapon was first developed during World War II, by scientists at Los Alamos, and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, and have since only been used twice. The first atomic bomb dropped by the United States from a B- 29 bomber plane, was dropped over the Japanese city of Hiroshima in World War II. The bomb detonated with 13 kilotons of force, which instantly killed 80,000 people. The second bomb was dropped over the city of Nagasaki. Over 100,000 people perished some instantly from the force of the bomb, and others of cancer from the radiation. It flattened the cities, and devastated the Japanese people. The bombings brought World War II to an end. This innovation and the events that proceeded, severely impacted the course of history. Following the dropping of the bombs and the end of World War II, was the Cold War. Due to these bombings the Soviet Union and United States engaged in a nuclear arms race, and it is now possible to obliterate large pieces of land, and kill hundreds of thousands of people in seconds.

Significance

The atomic bomb was a significant advancement in warfare. Many innovations were developed after World War I and World War II in order to advance in the war as well as improve the lives of civilians after the destruction. This pushed electronic advancements such as the computer. The very first computer which wasn’t exactly portable and only computed a few items, was created in 1946 in order to aid the United States in war. Its first duties were to do calculations for the construction of a hydrogen bomb. This early computer and bomb launched humanity into the information age, in which the computer has become an essential in everyday life.
